Blair Allsopp has made it his mission to explore as much of Brisbane’s history as possible, and uncover as many of its secrets too. He tells these stories on his fantastic, award-winning show, The Great Day Out. We were absolutely chuffed to be featured on The Great Day Out with Blair, as part of his visit to the beautiful Redlands district. And we learned a few things as well!
Redlands Secret: The Best Flowers Brisbane
As Blair highlights in the video, from settlement until increased development in the 1970s, the Redlands was known as the salad bowl of Brisbane. From feeding all of Brisbane, to being the site of Australia’s first commercially sold sugar, the Redlands is renowned for its thriving agricultural history. Our rich red soil gives the region its name (‘red land’) and its extremely fertile soil makes it the perfect growing environment.
Today the Redlands continues to be the perfect environment for growing crops, but it’s also wonderful for growing our beautiful flowers. Its rich, red soil produces a wide range of deep soil flowers, including out beautiful gerberas and carnations and gorgeous seasonal flowers. You’ll spy our vibrant gerberas from the thirty second mark in the Great Day Out video!
Fresh Cut Flowers Grown in Rich, Red Soil
We’re so lucky to have our Redlands land for The Flower Farm. It means we can produce the best flowers in Brisbane, from which we create beautiful bouquets and boxes for every occasion.
Our own history spans forty years of growing flowers locally in the Redlands district. We’ve moved away from the wholesale supply of flowers to florists across Southeast Queensland and are instead focusing on providing locals with our version of ‘paddock to plate’ – farm grown, top quality blooms, direct to your kitchen vase or loved one.
Most of our flowers are harvested from our own fields. For flowers that do not grow well in our climate (bulbs such as tulips and irises) we source them direct from growers in other regions, to bypass storage, over-handling and to ensure freshness. But our beautiful growing environment means we get a wide variety of beautiful blooms right from our own back yard (or back fields, really). And picking flowers grown in their correct environments means our customers can choose from a variety of beautiful blooms at their freshest and best.
A Great Day Out in the Redlands
With Blair as a guide (in his video), you can spend a great day out in the Redlands district. Recreate Blair’s day with morning tea at historic Ormiston House and a trip to the Redland Museum. As Blair shared, the Dan Holzapfel Farm Pavilion is worth a look, to see the agricultural history of the salad bowl region of Brisbane.
