From Farm to Vase: The benefits of buying locally grown fresh cut flowers

We love to tell everyone that at The Flower Farm we’ve been the home of fresh flowers in Brisbane since the 1970s. Since that time we’ve learned a great deal about the benefits of locally grown, fresh-cut flowers – both for our wonderful customers, and the planet as a whole.

From Farm to Vase – the benefits of buying locally grown, fresh-cut flowers

Longer vase life

One of the easiest-to-see benefits of buying locally grown, fresh-cut flowers is the enhanced vase life. At The Flower Farm, we cut our blooms with in 24 hours prior to creating our arrangements or bouquets. Because of that, they can last up to two weeks, since they are harvested at the ideal time and their only travel is directly from farm to vase.

On the other hand, flowers that come via a retailer or supermarket will have gone through several other transportations as well as time in a cooled storage facility, before reaching your home. So it just makes sense that locally grown, fresh-cut flowers will have a longer vase life, and can spend more time beautifying your home. And with our same day delivery, you can have the freshest blooms delivered today!

More beautiful blooms

For all the same reasons, farm-fresh flowers are more beautiful, with richer colours and a more robust look. That’s because they are picked at the ideal moment, after being allowed to ‘ripen’ before being cut. These will bring longer life, of course, but also more beautiful flowers to brighten your home.

Greater variety

When you buy locally, you will also get the benefit of a larger variety of flowers. Most bouquets from big retail shops will only contain a few flower varieties – meaning your choice is limited. Because we grow a huge variety of flowers – such as chrysanthemums, carnations, gerberas and more – and under just the right conditions, we have more options and better blooms at fantastic prices.

Shop seasonally

When you buy flowers straight from the farm, you’re getting what’s in season. And that brings wonderful benefits. You’re buying blooms when they’re at their most beautiful, their most abundant, their most affordable and in peak conditions. Plus seasonal purchases are less taxing on the environment, using natural resources to create the end product (such as the sun and rain in our case!) rather than having to force growth (with irrigation and grow lights).

Plus it keeps us aligned with the seasons – something that just feels good.

We love putting together our seasonal bunches and arrangements!

Food for bees, insects and wildlife

A fantastic benefit of buying locally grown flowers is that you’re also supporting bees, insects and wildlife. Flowers provide food and sustenance to these creatures. And then those hard-working creatures can also do their job pollinating native plants and flowers and local food sources and crops further supporting our local environment.

Support your local economy

Buying fresh-cut flowers from local flower farms is a fantastic way to support your local economy. In fact, it has all the same benefits as buying locally grown foods. Buying local:

  • Diminishes carbon emissions by limiting long transportations
  • Allows you to support your local farmers and growers
  • Keeps your dollars in your local community
  • Is an investment in the future of your community (the more people buy local, the more local businesses can stay afloat and even open!)
